Make them lose their sleep.” – Claude Alvares
Every day a piece of Goa dies. Trees, hills, rivers, springs, beaches, villages. Mega development projects are killing the natural and social environment of our villages. Tenants, tribals and fisherfolk sidelined. Lands in the hands of speculators. Young people unable to purchase homes or access good jobs. Natural wealth looted.
Meanwhile, we have been steadily looted of our natural wealth especially iron ore. In 8 years of mining, Goa got less than 5% of the earnings generated, 95% went to mining companies and central government. Goa lost Rs.54,000 crores of natural wealth (only counting iron ore mining). For next 12 years, Goans will lose another Rs.79,000 crores, as 88 mining leases have been renewed, allowing mining companies free access to the natural treasures we own. Ironically, Goan citizens are deepest in public debt compared to people of all other states.
We want MLAs that put Goans, especially ordinary Goans, at the centre of planning and investment. We want to hand over Goa to the next generation in a safe and happy environment, just as we found it, without resources stolen. Is this too much to ask?
